Setting up a basic wesite using FTP
- Ok folks I've spent about one year trying to get a website up and running.
Now it is a lot of work if one is starting from scratch like I did.
However, following this simple guide one can do the whole lot in about an
evening. It's one of those things, if you know it then it's simple. This is
why I want to put up a guide to creating and putting up a simple website
using FTP File Transfer Protocol. If that's over your head then you'd
probably be best to set up a site using templates which most site providers
provide. Ok so I'm dealing with folks who have already put up sites with
templates and want some more options with how their site appears. This is
where FTP comes in, it lets one upload personally designed sites right from
one's PC.
- Step one you need a site that gives you some free webspace. Fortunecity is a good one and it gives you unlimited webspace, go to: Fortuncity.com.

- Step two you need an upload manager. Go here:
WS_FTP95 LE
and download' WS_FTP95 LE. You want the evaluation version. It's free.
- Step three you'll need to know the basics of putting together a site. This
is really easy, well as long as someone is pointing the way as I am. Anyhows the basics are here, HTML Basics. Just check how easy a 'Simple HTML Document' is!! If this sounds like a bit too much work for now then you could start with Cool page. It's free and let's you make a website easily, go here and download it: Cool Page . Then you can save as a html page and upload(see next paragraph) as normal. Now a word of warning about Cool Page, it does lots of annoying stuff and will be slower in the long run.!!
- Step four, ok so you've got your basic webpage and links etc. Now all you need to do is upload it. This is where you use your upload manager. Now the settings can be a bit tricky if you don't know them, this is why I have specifically directed you to fortunecity, because I know the settings. Anyhows the settings are: for 'Profile Name:' put anything say 'first go on ws', for 'Host Name/Address:' put 'ftp.fortunecity.com', for 'Host Type' put 'Automatic detect' for 'User Id' put the user Id that fortunecity gave you. For password put the one that fortunecity gave you.
- Part five, this is just a few handy things to know. Now this is of absolute priority, you must be very careful, as you go along, to make sure that everything is spelt correctly. I know that I'm putting this at the end but I'm hopping that you've got enough patience to read this short guide before doing the whole thing… This may seem like a lot of reading, but believe me it is in it's most condensed form and you will not find another guide to using FTP to get a site online that's any shorter, or more to the point. If there was one then I would have just directed you to it. If you find one then tell me about it and together we can help the men's movement to be the most powerfull in the world... More advanced stuff can be accessed from links in 'HTML BASICS'. With these you're ready to do the most difficult of stuff. You won't need them for most purposes... Another thing, with fortunecity and any free website you're going to get some annoying pop-ups. There's nothing that you can do about that, it comes with the territory of getting things free. I suggest just suffering it until your proficient enough to buy a web domain. One last thing, you have everything to start you, and you can produce a nice site, however you may want to just give you site that polished professional look.
Go here: HTMLkit , and download HTMLkit (free of course), it will give everything you need.
Good luck!!!! Remember if you succeed then everyman everywhere
succeeds. Then the whole world gains!!
